Make Room for Growth

Make Room for Growth

Growth is often framed as something to pursue. We have another goal to reach, another skill to master, another level to achieve. But, growth often requires a different approach. Sometimes, before we can add anything new, we have to make room.

We accumulate more than we realize. Full calendars. Old commitments. Expectations we’ve outgrown. Habits that once served us well. Relationships that require more energy than they return. Even ideas about who we are and what we’re supposed to be can take up space long after they’ve stopped serving us. And when every space is occupied, there’s nowhere for the new to land.

Making room for growth doesn’t mean abandoning everything you’ve built. It means becoming more intentional about what gets to come with you. It’s asking yourself: Does this still belong in the life I’m building? Sometimes the answer is yes. Some things simply need to be strengthened, reorganized or given more attention. But many times the answer is no. There are things that may need to be released. This can be difficult because letting go can feel like losing ground. But, in reality, creating space can be an act of progress—you become lighter, more agile—able to move freely.

We have the right to protect our space—space to think, to reflect, to dream, and to plan. When every moment is filled with meetings, messages, responsibilities and other people’s needs, it becomes difficult to hear our own thoughts clearly. We can become so busy managing what already exists that we never stop long enough to imagine what could be next for us. And, there is always a next—another possibility, another opportunity, another version of ourselves waiting for the space to emerge.

Growth needs some room to breathe. It needs time for curiosity. Time to reconsider. Time to learn something new without immediately needing to be good at it. Time to meet new people and hear different perspectives. Time to recognize opportunities that might have been invisible when we were moving too quickly.

The goal isn't to create an empty life. It's to create an intentional one.

As you think about where you want to grow next, don't only ask, What do I need to do?

Ask another question:

What do I need to make room for?

Maybe it's a new opportunity.

Maybe it's rest.

Maybe it's creativity, friendship, leadership, learning or joy.

Growth doesn't always begin by adding more.

Sometimes it begins by making room. Make a list of what not “to do”.
